Why is Hepatitis B Vaccination Important?

Hepatitis B, a viral liver disease, has an infection transmission rate of 6%-30% among non-immunized healthcare workers. Approximately 5%-10% of those infected will develop chronic liver disease, with a 20% lifetime risk of death from cirrhosis and a 6% lifetime risk of death from liver cancer.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that all healthcare workers and students receive two or three doses of the vaccine and undergo Hepatitis B surface antibody (Anti-HBs) testing to confirm immune status.

Studies show that Anti-HBs >10 mIU/ml is highly effective for both pre-exposure and post-exposure prevention. Side effects of the Hepatitis B vaccine are minimal and may include mild fever and pain at the injection site.

Treatment for Hepatitis B depends on the exposed individual's immune status and the test results of the source patient. The source patient should be tested for Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), and if the result is negative, no post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is needed.

If the result is positive or unknown, the PEP regimen will depend on the exposed individual's immune status. If the exposed individual is a confirmed responder (Anti-HBs >10 mIU/ml), no further action is needed.

If the exposed individual has not responded to six doses or two series of vaccinations (Anti-HBs <10 mIU/ml), two doses of Hepatitis B immune globulin (HBIG) should be administered one month apart. Finally, if the exposed individual is unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated, one dose of HBIG should be administered, and the vaccination series should be completed.
