What is Meningococcal Meningitis?

Meningococcal meningitis is a dangerous but preventable infectious disease in humans.  The only host for the infectious agent is humans; both healthy carriers and patients with meningococcal meningitis can be sources of infection.  The rate of asymptomatic infection is high, with carrier rates reaching 25% to 50% during outbreaks. Therefore, vaccination is very necessary.

Nm is mainly transmitted directly through respiratory droplets via coughing and sneezing. Children under 15 years old are susceptible, so meningococcal meningitis vaccination should be arranged before the peak season in areas where children gather, such as kindergartens and schools.

According to meningococcal meningitis case reports, cases occur in all age groups, but mainly in people under 15 years old. The incidence of meningococcal meningitis is higher in children ≤5 years old, with the highest incidence in children under 1 year old; the younger the age, the higher the incidence.  Adolescents and the elderly are also susceptible. The disease is more prevalent in winter and spring, with cases generally increasing in November-December, and the peak period occurring from February to May of the following year.

Who Especially Needs to Be Vaccinated Against Bacterial Meningitis?

If you belong to any of the following groups and have not yet been vaccinated, it is recommended that you get vaccinated as soon as possible:

1. People traveling to or residing in high-risk areas, i.e., areas where Neisseria meningitidis types A, C, Y, and W135 are prevalent.

2. People who may be exposed to Neisseria meningitidis types A, C, Y, and W135 through airborne contact in laboratory or vaccine production work.

3. High-risk individuals in areas where national health authorities predict potential outbreaks of Neisseria meningitidis type Y and W135 infections, based on epidemiological investigations.

Product Storage

The Bacterial Meningitis Vaccine must be stored and transported in a light-protected environment at 2-8°C.

The shelf life is 36 months. Once the vaccine vial is opened for administration, please use it immediately.
